Description

This guide equips early-phase architects at RIBA Stage 0–2 with a rigorous, repeatable methodology for testing

building massing against solar, daylight, and wind microclimate targets before a single detailed model is constructed. It demonstrates how Autodesk Forma is used to generate and evaluate dozens of geometric permutations simultaneously — not to replace the architect's judgement, but to accelerate the exploration phase so that more options are tested and the shortlisted directions are defensible.

Your client wants to see three massing options. Under the traditional workflow, that means three weeks of modelling and simulation — if you're fast.

By the time you've built the first model, exported it, run the simulation, reviewed the results, and adjusted for the second pass, the deadline has arrived. The client gets two options. Neither of them has been tested against the full range of environmental targets. The senior principal asks a question you can't answer with certainty.

Forma changes the workflow — not the architect's role.

Forma generates and analyses dozens of permutations simultaneously. The architect defines the constraints, sets the fails criteria, reviews the fitness scores, and authorises the shortlist. AI accelerates exploration. The architect directs it. The client sees 6 pre-validated options instead of 2 or 3 — and you can explain exactly why each one passed the environmental targets.

This guide documents that methodology in full.

What You Get

Guide-Workbook

  • Site data preparation and EPW weather file import
  • Generative massing briefing — which parameters to expose, how many permutations to generate, how to interpret the fitness score
  • Simultaneous solar, daylight, and wind analysis across the full permutation set
  • Filtering, shortlisting, and client presentation workflow
  • The Cardiff Bay worked example: 180 permutations, 28 passed all targets, 6 shortlisted, 4 hours total vs. 3–4 weeks traditional
  • Complete architect's checklist and client presentation checklist
  • Formal limitations section — the epistemological boundaries of Forma analysis

Prompt Pack — copy-paste companion with ready-to-use prompts for:

  • Site setup and parameterisation (S1, S2)
  • Solar and wind analysis interpretation (A1, A2)
  • Results interpretation and shortlisting (R1, R2)
  • Limitations and epistemological framing for senior principals (L1, L2)
  • Quick reference card — print and keep at your desk

Who It's For

This guide is written for early-phase architects — at RIBA Stage 0–2 — who are technically sophisticated, sceptical of AI hype, and want to understand the methodology before committing to a tool.

You might be a:

  • Part 1 architectural assistant trying to demonstrate rigour to a sceptical principal.
  • A recently qualified architect building a portfolio of evidence-backed design decisions.
  • A senior associate trying to recover time in an already-overloaded schedule.

The common thread: you need to explore more options, faster, and present them with confidence.

Assumes: Professional knowledge of architectural design. Basic familiarity with daylight, solar, and wind concepts. No prior Forma experience needed.

The Tool Stack

  • Autodesk Forma — browser-based generative massing and environmental simulation (cloud, no installation required)
  • EPW weather files — EnergyPlus standard, UK weather stations (download from energyplus.net using ICAO code)
  • CIBSE LG10 / BREEAM HEA 01 — daylight autonomy standard (60% target for UK residential)
  • BRE Site Layout Planning for Sunlight and Daylight (2nd ed., 2011) — overshadowing standard
  • CIBSE TM59 — overheating risk indicator for residential
  • Companion LLM (Claude 3 or ChatGPT) — for drafting the client narrative from Forma data
  • Revit + IESVE — downstream at RIBA Stage 3+ for detailed simulation

Worked Example: Cardiff Bay Residential Quarter

Architect: Amara O., Associate Architect

Project: 96-unit residential development, Cardiff Bay brownfield site, 0.4 hectares

Constraints: Listed north neighbour requiring solar rights protection; Cardiff Bay waterfront with prevailing south-westerly wind acceleration; 8,500m² GFA

Amara needed a massing strategy for a client presentation in two weeks.

Using the workflow documented in this guide, she generated 180 permutations across three massing strategies in 30 minutes, ran simultaneous environmental analysis across all 180 in 10 minutes, and shortlisted 6 options from the 28 that passed all targets.

The 6 options she presented to the client came with Forma-generated renders, daylight heatmaps, and wind speed maps — and an opening line:

"We tested 180 massing options against your environmental targets using computational parametric analysis — not guesswork. These six passed all the defined targets. Here are the three we recommend, and why."

The client made a confident design direction decision within the meeting. The senior principal, initially sceptical, approved the approach and asked the other associates to use it.

Workflow | Time to Shortlist

Traditional (Revit + manual simulation) | 3–4 weeks

Autodesk Forma (this workflow) | 4 hours total
